Walter Gary Newsom

Walter “Gary” Newsom, of Leesburg, Georgia, and Inverness, FL, passed away peacefully on September 28, 2025, at his home in Leesburg, GA. Born on May 17, 1945, in Waycross, Georgia, he was the son of Robert Walter Newsom and Geraldine (O’Berry) Newsom. He grew up in Georgia and then in Florida, where he eventually met his beloved wife, Beatrice (“Bea”) Frost Newsom. He lived a life marked by warmth, devotion, and a deep love for family and friends.

Gary shared 35 cherished years of marriage with Bea. Together, they built a life filled with love and lasting memories. Though they primarily resided in Florida, they eventually split their time between Florida and Georgia. Gary worked as a manager in the meat department of Winn-Dixie for over 40 years in Florida before his retirement. An avid outdoorsman, he coached baseball when his sons were young, loved hunting and fishing, and enjoyed spending time at his home in Leesburg, Georgia. He was a Baptist by faith, and he will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Geraldine, as well as his grandson Cody Newsom.

Those left to cherish his memory include his beloved wife, Beatrice Frost Newsom; children, Gary Wayne Newsom (Angela) of Pikeville, Tennessee, Brett Newsom (Denise) of Harmony, FL, Robin Smith (Michael) of Cocoa, FL, and Todd Casidy of Kissimmee, FL; grandchildren, Dillon (Josie), Emily Grant (Blake), Dalton, Anna Mott (Cory), Christian Tate Casidy, and Heather Nicole Casidy; and 7 great-grandchildren.

Visitation and viewing will be held on Saturday, October 4, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel of Joseph W. Jones Funeral Home, with the funeral services to be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Rev. Tim Bass and Paul Branch will officiate. Burial will follow at Crown Hill Cemetery.
