Mr. Laurie Mackey, 90, passed away peacefully on February 25, 2026, in Foley, AL, surrounded by his family. He was truly happiest when with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were the light of his life.
Laurie was born in Butts County, Georgia, to the late Otis Henri Mackey and Sadie Pauline Smith. His early years took him from the classrooms of Indian Springs to Randolph County, eventually leading him to answer the call of service. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1953 and later settled in Cuthbert, GA, where he married his adored wife and North Star, Effie Turner, on August 14, 1960. He was a respected fixture at Wells Dairies (later known as Flavor Rich) for 36 years until his retirement in 1998.
Laurie was a man of quiet brilliance and diverse passions. He was a creator by nature, whether he was building an exquisite birdhouse from scratch, sketching and painting the world as he saw it, or watching for a specific bird to land in the garden he tended so carefully. He was a keeper of history, spending hours tracing the threads of his family’s genealogy, always eager to share a newly discovered story with anyone who would listen. Laurie didn't just have conversations; he had connections. Music was the heartbeat of his middle years; he sang in a cherished quartet from 1968–1980 alongside Fred Frazier, Buck White, and Jerry Brazeal. In his final years of life, he continued to find joy in gospel hymns, often singing whenever he was surrounded by his family.
His final chapter was written in Fairhope, AL, where his granddaughter Martha-Kate Osborne and her husband, Jeremy Osborne, provided him with a loving home and care he needed. Their dedication allowed him to fulfill his deepest wish of spending his final days with his cherished companion, Sam. He often reminded them of their vital place in his heart, saying, "You’re all I’ve got in this world. Without you, there’d be no point." A special thanks to Jeremy Osborne for being a pillar of strength and a constant source of laughter. Beyond his dedicated help with Laurie’s care, Jeremy’s quick wit and unwavering support kept Laurie’s spirits high. His ability to find levity in difficult moments was a blessing that Laurie- and the family- deeply treasured.
He is survived by his loving grandchildren: Martha-Kate Osborne and her husband, Jeremy-who became the person Laurie most looked forward to seeing each day- Charlie McPherson, Dusti Trawick, and his cherished great grandchildren: Dalton Osborne, Ava-Grace Osborne, Layla Osborne, Liam Osborne, and Maci Trawick, each of whom brought immense joy to his life; one sister: Gail (Mackey) Baker; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
Laurie was preceded in death by: his loving wife of 52 years, Glenda Effie (Turner) Mackey; one daughter, Inger McPherson (Mackey); and two sisters, Doris Valeria Curlee, and Julia Frances Roden.
In our sadness, we find profound peace in the promise that Laurie has been made whole again. We rejoice knowing that he stands in the presence of his Savior with a renewed body and a clear mind, free at last from the pains of this world. We imagine him reunited with his beloved Effie and all those who went before him. He is finally home, singing a perfect, tireless gospel song.
A private funeral ceremony with military honors will be held in Laurie’s honor. However, he touched many lives, and the family would be honored to have his many friends and family join us. If you would like to attend, please reach out to Martha-Kate Osborne at (251) 210-8759 for service details.
