Daniel "Dan" Jackson Wimbish

July 12, 1947 — October 18, 2023

Daniel Jackson Wimbish, known by almost everyone as Uncle Dan, passed away Wednesday, October 18, 2023 at his home in Atlanta. Uncle Dan was born in Durham, North Carolina to William “Bill” Wimbish and Eloise Glady Gamotis Wimbish on July 12, 1947. He was the oldest of three children and had two sisters, Mary Wimbish and Jane Wimbish Long. He is survived by his sister Mary Wimbish of Atlanta, brother- in- law, Chappell Long of Metter, 3 nieces, Jennifer (Derek) Price of Marietta, Stephanie Long of Manassas, and Lynette (Jonathan) Gordy of Sylvania, 2 great-nieces who called him “Unkie”, Caroline Price and Addison Price of Marietta, special friends from Metter, The Gals, Jason Jones, many Gamotis and Wimbish cousins, his neighbor Tammie Coggln, friend since high school, John Dubose, and his yoga instructor Raj.

Uncle Dan was a 1965 graduate of Marist High School in Atlanta. He graduated from Emory University with a degree in Chemistry and attended Brigham Young University in Utah. He taught algebra at St Pius X High School and was the owner of the Atlanta Appraisal Group. Uncle Dan served in the Vietnam War as an Army Medical Lab Specialist.

Over the years Uncle Dan enjoyed ballroom dancing, playing tennis, served on several ALTA teams, ran in Peachtree Road Races, and was an avid swimmer until his death. He also enjoyed yoga and tai chi. Uncle Dan enjoyed traveling all over the world, collecting art pieces, and studying the publishing industry during his travels. He was an aspiring author and struggled to write “That Damn Book!” Uncle Dan enjoyed collecting books on every topic under the sun! Uncle Dan was a huge supporter of PBS, the Virginia Highlands Farmers Market, and the DeKalb Farmers Market.

Uncle Dan was the absolute best house guest because he always brought his own food in his little blue cooler and always ended up eating your food anyway….but was never on time! He was everyone in the family’s greatest cheerleader and rarely missed a family event, holiday, birthday party, or performance. He taught his great nieces how to swim, drive his car, and to play tennis. Christmas was his absolute favorite holiday with Thanksgiving as a close second favorite.

Uncle Dan loved everyone he met and became like family to them. He was an unofficial member of the extended Long and Carter family. Uncle Dan was loved dearly and will be greatly missed.

Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 28, 2023, in the Leesburg City Cemetery. The family will visit with friends following the service at the cemetery.
