Countless times we are asked what is the difference between our funeral home and other providers. The answer is more than you may expect.

First is the experience we bring to the table. Our funeral home has served Bainbridge Island and the surrounding communities for over 84 years. We know the area, the resources it offers, and the wants and needs of the many families we are honored to serve. We understand the traditions of the people and what is most important when honoring their loved ones.

Next is our commitment to being of service personally. When you call us we respond. We don't use third-party companies or have people thousands of miles away answering our phones. This is not the case when you deal with other providers who advertise in our area. Many of these providers will tell you they will be there, but when the time comes, they have more excuses than solutions. Often we receive calls from families out of frustration and with nowhere else to turn, asking for help. Sadly this makes the difficulty of a loss that much harder.

Lastly is price. So many companies will promise to do it better, faster, and cheaper but rarely is that the case. The adage "you get what you pay for" still rings true today. More often than not you will find the advertised price is intended to get your attention and oftentimes is much lower than the actual cost.

In closing, we understand not everyone can afford a full-service funeral home. But making the wrong choice can be more difficult and more costly than you realize. Before you make a choice, call us and ask for a comparison or even assistance with costs, sometimes there are programs or options you aren't aware of that can help. There are certainly worse things than knowing the truth.

The Importance of Memorialization.

The vast majority of us strive to make a difference. Whether it be in our career, our family life, or as a volunteer for a good cause, we want to feel important and needed, that our lives have mattered.

As a society, we often bring people to the forefront and celebrate accomplishments and milestones. We make these events public and awards are commonplace while we surround the recipient with those closest to them and who matter the most in their lives. Sometimes we even involve the person who benefited from the actions of one or many.

It feels good to be recognized for these accomplishments; that warm fuzzy feeling we all have experienced at one point or another. But what about at the end of our lives? What then?

In today's fast moving world, we so often trivialize our own end of life. Although we work so hard to be recognized and respected in so many areas of our lives, when it comes to death you will hear...don't make a fuss, I really don't want anything. Don't waste your time and money on me, I'll be dead!

These words don't sit well with me, especially as a funeral professional. The importance of life and a life well lived is immeasurable. The impact so many of us have on our friends and family, our co workers, neighbors, or society as a whole is often underrated. We matter, Our story matters, And our life mattered. And I have the privilege of witnessing this time and time again in my profession.

Over my 35 plus years as a funeral director, I have had the pleasure of sitting down with countless families to discuss arrangements. I can tell you without hesitation, that I have been blown away by the accomplishments of so many. Some of these people are well known, others not at all, but their accomplishments were no less impressive. I have met the families of War hero's, inventors, celebrities, and normal every day folks, and I am always amazed at what these people have done. From being born before airplanes and cars, to making a 57 Buick fly across a theater, their lives mattered!

Imagine if generations before us felt the same way we do today, don't make a fuss. Imagine never celebrating or remembering the lives of Benjamin Franklin or Rosa Parks. Or simply forgetting those lost during 9-11. Imagine the countless cemeteries in our country that many of us have walked through reading epitaphs, were simply empty fields devoid of monuments to those who rest there. Their accomplishments forgotten as soon as their life ended. The accomplishments of so many would simply be forgotten.

We as a society need to take a step back and start believing the words we speak. Lives do matter! They are worthy of celebrating, remembering and memorializing. Some may have been very quiet and unassuming and others will be hard to forget, but all were lived and important to someone. Lets take a moment and make it a point to remember them. A celebration or memorial service can be as simple or as elaborate as you wish. Maybe a simple prayer or poem graveside, or maybe an intimate gathering is more appropriate. Regardless of the type of memorial chosen, it is an opportunity to remember those who have gone before us and to say thank you for what they have done and who they were; big or small.

Environmentally Friendly Options

As with many things today, we are all in search of better more environmentally conscience choices. Our planet is struggling and we are looking for new and better ways to lessen our impact and conserve resources. But what about when we die? What options are available to lessen the impact that traditional funeral choices bring with them?

At Cook Family Funeral Home we have not only asked those same questions, but we have taken steps to do something about it.

Starting with our Cemetery, Hillcrest on Bainbridge Island, we now offer the most environmentally friendly service available which is Natural Burial. By doing away with the need for embalming, caskets other than optional natural wood or wicker choices, and concrete vaults, we have greatly diminished the impact on our planet.

We are also the only funeral home and cemetery in Kitsap County offering this option and we are certified by the Green Burial Council.

In addition, we have also adopted Flameless Cremation or Aquamation as it is better known. This process uses an Alkaline Solution to do what cremation does, but with far less impact and zero carbon releases. This gentle process results in 20 % more remains returned to the family and benefit the environment at the same time.

Lastly is the Composting Option or Natural Organic Reduction. This process involves the placement of remains into a chamber with other organic materials. Over time, the natural process of decomposition takes place and mixes with the other materials eventually resulting in a Cubic Yard of Soil. This process is a good alternative for those who do not wish to be buried but would rather their remains be scattered and add some benefit to the environment in the process.
